Stories of Zadar
Five Wells Square (Trg pet bunara) came into being in 1574, during the defence against Turkish sieges, when the medieval defensive moat on the west side of the bastion was covered over. In its place a large cistern for drinking water was built, with five decorated well-heads (wells).

The square is shaped like an elongated, irregular rectangle and is enclosed on three sides: on the west by the medieval wall and the Captain's Tower (26 m high), and on the east by a retaining wall in the middle of which rises the entrance to the City Park, built on the Grimani bastion.
